What does a custom design-build firm in Cambridge do?
All ProjectsWe design and build the whole thing: the house, the cabinetry inside it, and the furniture that lives in the rooms. One shop, one set of standards, concept to completion.
The Cafasso Approach
How does the work actually get made?
Cafasso Design Group is a collaborative of architects, designers, artisans, and craftsmen. The same people who draw the detail are the people who cut it, which is why nothing is lost between the drawing and the room.
Concept to completion sits under one roof. We specify top-of-the-line materials and buy our lumber from small family-owned mills in New England that harvest sustainably, so we know the species, the stand, and the sawyer.
For architects and interior designers, that means a shop that can hold your detail without value-engineering it away.

“Martin brought materials into our house that we did not know existed, and an artistic vision that was steadier than our own. Three years on, we still find details we had not noticed.”
Common questions
What should you know before reaching out?
- What areas does Cafasso Design Group serve?
- We work throughout Greater Boston and eastern Massachusetts — Cambridge, Belmont, Brookline, Lexington, Concord, and the North and South Shores — and travel elsewhere in New England for the right project.
- What kinds of projects do you take on?
- Whole-house custom builds and gut renovations, architectural millwork and built-ins, stair and moulding work, and standalone furniture. Projects typically range from a single commissioned piece to a full residence.
- Do you work directly for architects and interior designers?
- Yes. After twenty years building our own projects, we now take contract work for architects and designers who need a shop that can hold a detail. We work from your drawings, produce shop drawings for approval, and communicate directly with your client only if you want us to.
- Can I commission a piece of furniture?
- Yes. The Gustav bed and dresser series can be built to your dimensions and wood species, and we accept fully custom commissions. Contact us for pricing and current lead time.
- How do I start a project with Martin?
- Call or text Martin directly, or send a note through the contact page with the scope, location, and rough timeline. We follow up with a conversation and, when the fit is right, a walkthrough.
